Gummelt’s satisfaction from working on the Jedi Knight series has not waned. “I’m not totally surprised because we did give them a lot of freedom, and it is a platform to play around in one of the most popular franchises of all time.” “I’m amazed at the longevity of it,” he says. “They want to be able to master every little aspect of lightsaber combat and force powers, so I can see it being harder, because that’s what they want.”ġ4 years after its release, Gummelt is rapt to see Jedi Academy still thriving from an active player base. Gummelt reluctantly admits that Jedi Outcast’s lightsaber combat once had a manual blocking system of it’s own, before it was removed due to difficulty concerns. The manual blocking system significantly slowed down the combat of Movie Battles 2 This increased the skill gap of duelling far beyond that of the base game. Movie Battles 2 in particular incorporated a manual blocking system, requiring pixel-perfect parries, ripostes and retreats to emerge victorious. While new maps, skins, weapons and modes make up the bulk of the new content, the overhaul of the lightsaber combat within these mods has been most instrumental in cultivating their dedicated following.
Jedi Academy’s online community has been singlehandedly sustained by its modding scene, which to this day remains active through various large-scale mods like Movie Battles 2 and Knights of the Force.
“I wanted to encourage that as much as possible because I was a modder myself and I knew how important having good tools are and how making it accessible is important.” “That was really a pleasant surprise for me. “I wanted to make the game as moddable as possible, because I saw how much the mod community really latched on to Jedi Outcast,” he says. This emphasis on player choice expanded further into the game’s modding capabilities, which Gummelt says were tailored specifically to accommodate for a vibrant online community.
